Fairy Tale Week got off to a flying start in Pre-Prep this week, with each year group following a different fairytale. The Nursery ran as fast as they could, as they attempted to catch the Gingerbread Man, Reception grew big eyes and big teeth as they came face to face with the ‘Big Bad Wolf’ in the Little Red Riding Hood. Year 1 were tempted with a house made of sweets as they explored Hansel and Gretel and Year 2 found themselves shrinking along with Alice in Wonderland.

Each and everyone enjoyed a very special week, which helped to promote a love of books and reading, as well as some drama and plenty of creativity.

As if that wasn’t enough, the week before, the Nursery and Reception also took part in a ‘Chatterbox Challenge’, aimed at celebrating, enhancing and extending their language and listening skills. All children experienced songs, poems, role-play and conversation opportunities throughout the day.

On the final day, the children dressed up in the theme of their book and gave their parents a wonderful assembly, presenting their experiences from their exciting week as well as their ‘Chatterbox Challenge’.

Head of Pre-Prep and Mastermind behind the week’s events, Rachel Cookson commented, “Fairy Tale Week is a wonderful celebration of fairytales, books and reading and it has been absolutely fantastic to see the children embracing the week with such excitement and enthusiasm. They put on a heart-warming assembly for parents to see and ended what has been a very busy half term on a great high.”

Result: Won 22-6
Player of the Match: Sophie Ridley
Not a particularly good display of netball but a good victory. It was exceptionally cold and hands were freezing but that should have encouraged a little more movement from the team. The passing was not accurate and weak and Beech Hall were allowed to make some easy interceptions. Crowding was an issue and this forced some wild passing. Our shooters shot well and our defenders held their leans but we were not fighting the ball and missed most rebounds. At least we played but I hope we come back ready for some hard work after half term.
Netball
Fixture: U13A v S Anselm’s (h)
Result: Lost 32-6
Player of the Match: Izzie Bulley
This was a difficult match against a very strong team. The S. Anselm’s girls were fast around the court and very quick on to the ball. They dominated right from the start and quickly built up a strong lead. The TN girls battled hard and credit must go to them for keeping their heads held high and for not giving up the fight. Izzie Bulley’s defensive work improved hugely as the game progressed, she became much more determined to fight for possession of the ball and for this she was my player of the match.
Netball	U13B v S Anselm’s (h)
Result: Lost 24-3
Player of the Match: Alice Hawke
Was a very tough game for the girls, with St Anselm’s dominating from the first whistle. Alice and Lauren played very well, getting many interceptions but the team struggled to score. The girls needed to fight for the ball more, as the opposing teams aggression seemed to be how they used the ball so well. The girls need to focus on passing more accurately, and using the ball at their own pace.
Fixture: Netball	U11A v S Anselm’s (a)
Result: Lost 17 – 7
Player of the Match: Lexie Linnell
The score line in no way reflects the play of our netball team. Every girl played their heart out; they played extremely good netball and at one point were within one point of the opposition. There was some fantastic shooting from both Tallulah and Kathryn and some great centre court work. Maria as Goal Defence was extremely athletic and made many fantastic interceptions. The defence by St Anselms was outstanding ; the Wing Defence and Goal Defence made it very difficult for our girls to get free and marked the attackers very closely. The player of the match could have gone to a number of the girls but Lexie was chosen due to her ability to get free and shake off her defender.
Player of the Match: Abigail Pickersgill
A very impressive display of netball from the girls and it was good for me to see how much they have improved. Fantastic interceptions made by all players but especially in the defence. Crowding was an issue and this often left us with no options on passing. More work is needed on developing strength in shoulder passes to get the ball to down the court quicker as chest passes become less effective as the girls get older.Good footwork and good marking from all the girls.
Player of the Match: India Blake
A lovely game of netball with our shooters on form and rarely missing. All the girls played wonderfully and moved about the court well, creating space and options for passing. It was good to see everyone getting a game and how well the girls worked together and supported each other. India is my player of the match because I was so impressed by how much she has improved. She caught every ball and made accurate passes.
Fixture: Netball	U9 v S Anselm’s (h)
Player of the Match: Jessica Evans
A promising standard of play from the year 4 girls. They all made good passes, used the space well and intercepted the ball to regain possession. Lucy and Francesca worked well together to get the ball in to the shooting area and were strongly supported by Grace O. and Grace F in turn. Jessica was a key link from the defence to the attacking players and was always in a good space. For this I have awarded her player of the match. Strong defending form Lucy and Adelaide prevented St Anselm’s from taking many shots at goal. Well played to all the team.

Date: 20/01/2012
Fixture: Rugby	U10A v CLFS (h)
Result: Won 35-5
Players of the Match: Harry Sheil and Ollie Barlow
You had to be there really to witness what a very unusual game this was. The opposition dominated much possession and were technically excellent and clearly well drilled; however, in classic deep conter-attacking fashion, it was a combination of obdurate Terra Nova defence, hunger, aggression and savvy from Ike McCormick at the breakdown, the classy movement of Ollie Barlow and the straight powerful running of Max Rosser that helped bring victory to the home team. However, one man and his incredible pace was the destructive difference between the two sides and meant that one side so well matched in so many areas of the contest, were soundly beaten in terms of the score. Perhaps it is a weakness in the game that at this level if Harry Sheil had played for them, the scoreline may have been reversed. Well, that’s up for debate. I’m just glad Sheila played for us! What a great performance, what lovely boys from London the touring team proved to be and what fun we had staying overnight with crazy golf at the Trafford Centre, pizzas and staying over in dorms with our mates. I think this set of boys has the making of a top prep school outfit as it progresses up the age groups. We must always do what we are told and give our all to make our performances better irrespective of the match scorelines, whether they be positive or negative. Let’s judge our progress by the improvement to the details in our own game that need addressing, of which there are many. That’s not being negative – just ambitious. Exciting stuff! Wine for my men. We ride at dawn.
Fixture: Rugby	U10B v CLFS (h)
Result: Won 20-10
Players of the Match: Jake Reid, Gabriel Thorpe
A fantastic victory for our heroes in the nasty, cold and wet conditions. The two teams were well matched but Gabriel Thorpe’s excellent scrum half play and strong running from Jake Reid clinched the deal for the Cheshire Cats. Well done, boys! What a good fun Friday night we had too in the Trafford Centre.
Fixture: Hockey	U11A v APS (a)
Result: Lost 0-3
Player of the Match: Harry Sheil
The boys struggled to adjust to the foreign feel of the Astro turf. In the first half they put on a brave fight but were hampered by the individuality of most of the players, which cannot contend with a well oiled team. The second half saw a gutsy fight back with moments of good play but in the end the score reflects a fair result.
Player of the Match: Hal Dearnaley
The team played a fun and friendly match against even opposition. The boys all had a good time and a great run around. The commitment of most of the team was nice to see as well as a nice come back from behind.
Fixture: Netball	U9 v Beech Hall (a)
Result: Lost 0-2
Player of the Match: Olivia Adye
A lovely game with the girls learning so much as they rotated through the positions. Georgia, Adelaide and Jessica were very good at running into spaces and there were some lovely passes to them. Grace used her height to great advantage and made some good interceptions. EV was very strong at passing and always threw the ball to the free player. Olivia ran around with her usual enthusiasm and had very good footwork. Beech Hall had 1 very tall strong player who dominated the court and deprived our girls of taking many shots. Overall a good start to the season.
Team Manager: Mrs N Linnell

Fixture: Rugby	1st v Yarlet (h)
Result: Won 14-10
Player of the Match: Edward Sanson
This was a really hard fought for victory and a real blood and thunder game of Rugby. Yarlet scored first after a period of intense pressure and Theo, who had a sore back, joined the fray at inside centre. The breakdown was intensely competitive and there was a marked improvement in counter rucking. Andrew Kim did a particularly good job in the loose. There was stalemate with hard tackling from both sides before we finally got the ball out to Harry on the wing and he blisteringly jinked through defenders to score. We need to get it to him more often! The second half was again very even- so much so that Yarlet kicked a penalty fifteen minutes in – a pretty rare occurrence at this age! Then in the last five minutes Theo, who was fairly revved up by now, crashed over to score. The game remained extremely tense until at last the ball was booted into touch to end the game. Winning close games like this is a real testament to the boys’ character and it was the man of the match Edward who, perhaps on the day, demonstrated that determination to see things through. Well done all!
Team Manager: Mr W Dearnaley

Fixture: Rugby	Colts v Yarlet (h)
Result: Won 82-0
Player of the Match: Leo Cullis
Twelve tries and eleven conversions doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story. It is not always constructive for either side to win or lose by such a wide margin, but it was always a contest and Terra Nova played very well scoring some magnificent flowing tries. It can be easy to get over eager to score, but the boys played with a great deal of discipline to keep their structure. For the record, tries were scored by Leo Cullis (3), Gus Fiennes (3), Will Fosbrook (2), George Ridings (2), George Faulkner (1), Euan Cooper (1), with Hal Dearnaley kicking the conversions.
Team Manager: Mr AGW Lewin

Date: 25/01/2012
Fixture: Hockey	U13A v SMH (h)
Result: Lost 3-4	Lauren Reid
The girls were distracted and elsewhere in their match preparation and went down early to a determined opposition. Toward the end of the first half the girls showed good character to fight back with a pair of goals of their own. However discipline and the cool headed attitude of the opposition won the day as they clinched a nail biting winning goal just before the final whistle. It was not the best hockey played, but there was a camaraderie which will stay with the girls even after their last match.
Team Manager: Mrs N Linnell

Fixture: Hockey	U13B v SMH (h)
Result: Won 6:1
Player of the Match: Georgia Turner
The TN U12 team dominated this match. The girls started strongly, passing accurately to each other and moving into space effectively. The half time score of 4:0 to TN was a good indication of the work that Kate Whitehead, Amy Lewin, Georgia Turner and Jemima Pickersgill were doing to take advantage and press home the attack. SMH were struggling to get the ball out of their half.In the second half Georgia Turner moved back to defence and Lizzie Mee moved up front into the attack. Jay Cross played in goal and when called upon, cleared the ball effectively back down the wing. Larissa Pietersma played well at Centre Half, tackling effectively and passing the ball forward. It was a very tough decision to choose a player of the match as this was truly a team performance. On balance Georgia Turner, who played her forward and defensive roles with such effectiveness just edged it!Team Manager: Mrs N Linnell

Fixture: Netball	U11 v Pownall Hall (a)
Result: 10 – 3 (a loss)
Player of the Match: Grace Harrison
Although it was a loss, the team played well. Pownall came out from the initial whistle and scored several of their goals in the first quarter. After the team talk at the break, our girls came out much stronger and began defending better. The passing of the ball around the court improved also as the match progressed. Unfortunately we were faced with some excellent shooting from Pownall to which we couldn’t respond. The girls did play extremely well as a team which was commented on by the umpire from Pownall. I awarded Grace Harrison ‘Player of the Match’ as she always managed to shake her defender off and create space. Particularly good also, were Charlotte Conniff and Madison Lyons.
Team Manager: Mrs A Kelly

Fixture: Netball	U11A v Packwood (h)
Result: Lost 2 – 6
Player of the Match: Eliza Brown
This was an extremely well-fought match, where it was clear form the first whistle that we would need to mark the opposition tightly and work hard to create space. Lexie and Emily were quick at their dodging, driving into space at the right moment. Maria and Georgia made it very difficult for their shooters to receive the ball. Kathryn and Tallulah took some good shots at goal. However, Player of the Match goes to Eliza Brown who worked tirelessly in the centre of the court, dodging into space and making her physical presence known! Well done.
Team Manager: Mrs A Kelly

Fixture: Netball	U9 v Packwood (h)
Result: Lost 4-5
Player of the Match: Adelaide Sillar
What a fabulous match. It was so exciting, nail biting stuff and some fabulous netball was played. It was a proper netball match with the 7 girls playing a 7 aside game and no rotation of position. This allowed the girls to get really stuck in and do their jobs properly. Adelaide stuck to her GA and made some fabulous interceptions. Lucy B was a very solid and reliable GK who grabbed any loose ball and passed accurately. Jessica and Lucy E were great centre court players and moved the ball well up the court to our attacking team. Georgia adopted the hurl the ball into our end approach very successfully and made some excellent passes to our shooters. Francesca and Grace were on form and shot with accuracy and panache. In the final 10 second we had 3 shots on goal and each hit the rim and bounced away otherwise it would have been a well deserved draw. Great start girls and lots of potential for the future.
U13 Netball Tournament
Foremarke Hall
Result: 6th Overall
Player of the Match: Georgia Turner
An unusual day of netball with the cold and ice forcing all teams into the sports hall and the matches being only 5 minutes long. We are slow to get going and this showed as there was no time to spare. Our 1st match was against Foremarke who were the eventual winners. We did not make it easy for them with some superb defending giving them lots of problems getting the ball to their shooters. We struggled with overhead passes against the taller girls and did not adapt our game which left us open to interceptions. We held our own against S.Anselms and lost by 1 goal. This gave us increased confidence in the match against Bromsgrove who we beat convincingly. Going into our final match against Westbourne we were narrowly beaten but the ball was end to end with both teams playing very well. Well played to everyone and we now have lots to work on.
Rugby	1st XII v Ryleys (h)
Result: Won 61-21
Player of the Match: Tom Bromley-Davenport
This was a pretty one sided match and it was encouraging to see how much Rugby we played. We tried really hard not to just run through people and instead we threw the ball around and tried to avoid contact. The fact that Sean scored tries on the wing was testament to this. Some strong running from James Parsonage and excellent conversion kicking from Tom Bromley-Davenport also deserve honourable mention. Tom ‘s distribution was also excellent.Well done all.
Rugby	U10 v Ryleys (h)
Result: 55-0
Players of the Match: Finlay Kenneally and Euan Cooper
Score lines do not reflect how well a set of boys has played. Whether you win or lose does not tell you how well you have done. Take football as an example: you could lose to Man Utd’s first team 5-4 and the next week beat St Trinian’s Under 10 Cs 1-0. I know which performance would have been the more impressive. Yes, it was the performance that was outstanding yesterday. It has become predictable that I am going to witness match winning performances from McCormick, Sheil and Rosser every fixture. They are that good. However, I have decided to award the man of the match jointly to Cooperman and Shark Fin Kenneally for progress they have made in their performances compared to previous ones. They, like George (who can still get more aggressive), Stephen (awesome tackler), Jake (great run near the end and busy all day), Ben (a turn of pace and very good hands yesterday), Eddie (Mr 100% in all he does) and Harrie (another quicker boy than I realised), have invested in Games lessons and undoubtedly felt the buzz on match day of achieving something a bit special. They all got their hands on the ball, they put tackles in, they got it wide – they were playing rugby that reflected a team who had been coached and were doing what they had been told, rather than having a lovely day going through the motions , smiling at Mummy on the side. How much more fun it is to reap the benefits on match day even if it does take a bit of persuasion from Mr Livermore and Mr Armitage-Shanks in Games lessons. The fun is getting better if you’ve got it in you individually and as a team to do so. These boys have got a lot of stuff. How proud Mr Armitage Shanks and I were of the obvious improvement and clear signs that pennies have dropped and the switch is very much on. Wine for my men. We ride at dawn!!
Netball	U10 v LBHS (a)
Win 2-1
Player of the Match: Amelia Gachet
Was a close game between Terra Nova and Lady Barn from the very beginning, with Lady Barn holding possession for most of the first quarter. Terra Nova got the first score at the start of the second quarter when Lauren used what we have done in games to get in front of her opponent to get the shot. It was in the third quarter when Lady Barn got their return score and put the pressure on Terra Nova. The girls worked hard in the second half, keeping possession through accurate passes, and steady footwork; Amelia and Evie being stand out players with this. Amelia got the final goal in the last quarter, giving Terra Nova the 2-1 win.
Netball	U9 v LBHS (a)
Result: 0-1
Player of the Match: Lucy Exley
A great start to the season! It was the first time out playing High Fives this season (both for myself and the girls!) It was a closely fought match which kept us on tenterhooks throughout. The girls played very well as a team. They very much enjoyed playing in their ‘usual’ netballing positions. Now we will be focusing on in practice sessions, playing in different, and perhaps not so favoured, positions. Much energy was shown by Lucy Exley who moved the ball around well and made space. Lucy was also voted ‘Star of the Match’ by the team from Lady Barn. Grace Oakley also, was very effective in creating space and played particularly well. Our goal was scored near the beginning of the match and we managed to hold on. Lady Barn missed numerous attempts to score against us in the final quarter, resulting in Terra Nova being victorious. We can’t wait for our next match!
Netball	U11A v SMH (h)
Result: Lost 0 – 16
Player of the Match: Lexie Linnell
A very tough game for the U11s against a quick and strong side from SMH. The opposition won the toss and took the first centre pass and our girls were thrown by how quickly SMH moved the ball down the court. We struggled to defend against a bigger team and lost possession through rushing our passes. The umpiring was very strict and the girls were caught out on the footwork rule on too many occasions.During the second half of the match the girls started to jump and defend much better but were often out of position as SMH did not allow us to play. This led to crowding, making passing much more difficult. A brave effort!
Netball	U11B v SMH (h)
Result: Drew 2 – 2
Player of the Match: Emily Heidemann
The girls played well, showing good space around the court and passing the ball accurately to each other. The opposition were taller than us so we had to work hard on our dodging to get free for each other. Ellie Costello scored both of our goals with some lovely shooting but SMH came back with 2 of their own in the 3rd quarter. Our defence worked really hard to mark their attackers, with Emily Heidemann showing great resilience and energy to make it extremely difficult for their Goal Attack to receive the ball. We were unlucky that the final whistle blew just as Ellie had the ball raised towards the net. She was denied the opportunity of scoring the winning goal!
X-Country	Giggleswick Catteral Shield	U11
Result: U11 Won U13 5th
A fabulous effort from all the boys over a great course. The U11 team had very good individual results with Will coming 4th, Harry C, 5th, Leo 9th, Oliver Taylor 36th and Oliver Goodman 90th. With Oliver T only in Year 4 this gives lots of potential for the future. With team score of only 54 this secured the boys 1st place which is wonderful for the 1st time we have entered this event. By the time the U13 boys ran the course was very muddy and slippery. With only 4 runners all had to get round in good times to be in with a chance. Jack rose to the challenge and secured 3rd place, again this gives us potential for next year when we will have a very strong field of year 8 boys. Charlie came 14th, Dan 28th and that was after he stopped to be sick half way round! and Oliver Sykes 34th. The Catterall Shield is known to be one of the hardest cross country courses and is very well attended. Over 90 boys ran in each race so it was a great day for Terra Nova runners.

Netball	U12 v Rossall (h)
Result: Won 26 – 2
Player of the Match: Amy Lewin
A fabulous performance by the year 7 girls. We were dominant in all areas of the court and in all aspects of the game. Our marking was tight, we made great interceptions, found huge space and passed the ball with accuracy. It was Lauren Batt and Amy Lewin who were the stars of the show with their fantastic shooting, ably assisted by Lizzie Mee and Georgia Turner in one of the quarters! We conditioned our game so the girls could only pass the ball to one player, ensuring that they all had to work extremely hard to get free and ensure that the ball moved up the court at pace, rather than leaving Amy a near-impossible pass to Lauren in the circle. Also, we could not pass the ball once in the shooting circle, so Amy and Lauren practised their distance shooting! Brilliant!
Team Manager: Mrs N Linnell

Netball	U13 v Rossall (h)
Result: Win 16-12
Player of the Match: Larissa Pietersma
The girls played some lovely netball and the high passes into the D by Sophie and Olivia were wonderful. The Rossall girls were tall and began to make interceptions but with skilful dodging we still managed to get the ball into the shooters who were quick to step back and distance themselves from the good lean of the defenders. Centre court play was fast and accurate and the ball was moved rapidly up to our attacking end. Mary-Kate was a demon at getting a touch on the ball and deflecting the pass. Lauren R made an excellent WD and used her height to great advantage. J and Izzy played very well in defence and were calm and passed well out of the danger area. Sophie C fought hard despite both Rossall shooters being a foot taller than our defenders. Well done girls, growing in confidence and playing your game.

The biggest survey of wildlife in UK schools started this month and the Nursery and Reception classes were very proud to be a part of it, as they celebrated “Great Outdoors Week at Terra Nova”.

The RSPB’s Big Schools Birdwatch saw the EYFS (Nursery & Reception) children watch excitedly, with their binoculars as they stepped outside to look for and count the birds that share their wonderful outdoor environment. Blessed in over 30 acres of stunning grounds, its no surprise the children saw a Jay, a Songthrush and 3 Nuthatch amongst the thriving bird population.

New video cameras and digital cameras have been purchased for every class in the Pre-Prep and the children are continuing to celebrate their environment by making bird feeders, researching habitats and geography and looking at maps.

Head of Pre-Prep and Nursery, Rachel Cookson commented, “The children at Terra Nova are so fortunate to be in such wonderful surroundings. Children love wildlife and we are blessed with an abundance of fascinating wildlife here. The youngest children in the Nursery and Reception classes were completely inspired to connect with the nature that lives alongside them at school. We would like to say a big thank you to the RSPB for all their enthusiasm and inspiration.”

Rugby	2nd XII v Beech Hall (h)
Lost 44-15
Player of the Match: Will Biggs-Lovell
Initially things looked good when the sides lines up but Beech Hall had some strength on one wing and it became obvious that TN were in for some serious tackling due to the oppositions size. Sadly for our 1st kick off the ball went straight to the biggest player on the Beech Hall team who promptly ran it back and scored under the post. Adjusting the kick off direction allowed us to get stuck in. It took the boys a while to realise that if they tackled low and ran straight with the ball they could compete. Tom Exley eventually scored at half time. In the 2nd half TN continued to tackle hard, lead by Harvey and Will B-L. They passed the ball around and this lead to some great runs from the back line and 2 further tries by Tom Blood and Will B-L. It was great to see the team begin to believe in themselves and play some good rugby.
Rugby	Colts B XII v Beech Hall (h)
Won 39-0
Players of the Match: Harry Sheil, Blake Hannaby-Cummings
In this local Cheshire derby, it turned sour for the cream of Macclesfield as the white and green machine went through the gears to great effect against the scarlet pimpernels of Beech Hall. A colossal 17 man squad all played their part in making the masters in charge very proud indeed. Well done the boys – men of the match were the flying Sheil and the aggressive skipper Handful Cummings. Awesome performances from “On Your Bike” Ike, Maximus Rosser – he’ll tackle you in this life or the next and the Wizard of Oz, Christian Gardiner playing his first ever rugby match, did not go unnoticed. Thank you for your efforts and commitment, boys. Let’s get out on that Games field and get even better for next time!!! So, on the day that an established, proper club in Liverpool defeated the sky blueveau riches, who would have thought that such a big match would be overshadowed by a performance that will go down in Cheshire history. The Terra Nova Colts B notched 39 unanswered points – I’ve heard a chap called John Buchan has already written a book about it – The 39 Side Steps. Let not light see the black and deep desires of these merchants of menace and if all their world is a rugby field, play on!Wine for my men. We ride at dawn.
Netball	U13A v Foremarke Hall (h)
Won 14-13
Player of the Match: Sophie Cullis
A fantastic start to the season. It had been very hard to select the girls for the team from such a strong bunch but once the decision had been made everyone pulled together and fought for every ball. Alice-May and Amy were on fire with their shooting. Olivia and Georgia made some superb interceptions and fed the ball accurately into the D. Sophie and Izzy took on the tall Foremarke shooters and defended incredibly well. Lauren and Annie had to work hard to keep up with their partners and were then very quick to become attacking players when we regained the ball. A great start girls. Well done.
U11A v Foremarke Hall (h)
Won 10 -2
Player of the Match: Maria Bort
Excellent start to the season. The girls have worked hard in practice sessions, concentrating on creating space and timing a run. They used this to good effect in the match, moving the ball swiftly from GK to GS. All the girls jumped to intercept the ball and made accurate passes to the next player in the link. Accurate shooting by Tallulah and Kathryn, strong defending by Georgia and Maria. Quick movement on court by Eliza, Lexie and Emily who worked as a team to move the ball to our shooters. Well played!
Won 8-0
Player of the Match: Sofia Pietersma
Excellent start to the season. The girls have worked hard in practice sessions to use space on the court and make accurate passes. They all worked as a team to move the ball from the defending third to the shooters. Madison was very quick to find space and move the ball on to Georgia. Eliza and Abigail defended strongly and Emily made some super interceptions. Sofia swapped to shooter and adapted confidently to her new position, moving very well on court and scoring several goals. Goals were also scored by Sophie and Georgia. A good team performance.
U13B v Foremarke Hall (h)
Won 10 -7
Player of the Match: Sophie Ridley
Wow – what a fantastic performance by all the girls and particularly impressive in a first match of the season. The girls showed great awareness of each other’s position and movement on the court. There were some fabulous passes and accurate shooting by Ottilie, Lauren and Larissa. Jay was extremely strong in defence making numerous interceptions at crucial times. Sophie was the star of the show as her insight into the game allowed her to dominate mid-court and execute sublime passes into our shooters. A superb start by everybody!
Rugby
1st XII v Rossall (h)
Won 19-12
Player of the Match: Andrew Kim
This was a fantastically competitive match with TN showing tremendous courage and tenacity. The first half was dominated by Rossall and we had very little territory or possession. However the defence was immense, particularly by the back three of Irlam, Church and Neary, who all made try saving tackles. We went into the break, two tries to one down. Ours scored by Andrew Kim with an immense burst of pace and followed up with a superb touch line conversion by Tom B-D. In the second half we had more ball and kicked reasonably well for territory. Andrew scored two more tries and there was some excellent handling. The last few minutes seemed like hours as we defended like lions and when the ball finally was booted out – there was a sense of real relief and no little satisfaction of a job well done! Congratulations to all and thank you to our opponents for such a great game, played in an immaculate spirit. Well done!

In November 2011 the 1st VIII shooting team from Terra Nova School competed in the National Prep Schools Air Rifle Championships for the first time and won.

Having competed successfully for almost 100 years with smallbore rifle, Terra Nova pupils recently had a change from smallbore rifle to 10 metre air rifle – the junior version of the Olympic discipline – when school redevelopment saw the old smallbore range converted to new classrooms.

The new discipline demands an even more detailed approach to technique training and the challenge is to score well on demanding targets.

With the new range not completed until half term, the team had time for just one practice before shooting the national match, but having prepared well with classroom and ‘dry’ training the team shot a competitive score and awaited the results.

The results have recently been announced and it was with great delight and pride that the Master I.C. Shooting – Mr Curtis – was able to deliver the news that the 1st VIII had won the National Championships at the very first attempt! The team included Mary Kate Rylands, Lauren Reid, Olivia Stanley, Matthew Clark, Alice-May Bolshaw, Izzie Bulley and Alice Hawke all in Year 8 and Tom Exley in Year 7, all of whom are pictured with their enormous trophy.

Mr Curtis commented, “Our smallbore skills transferred well to the new discipline and we set ourselves a challenging but achievable target score which we felt would be competitive. In the end it was enough to win by some margin and the victory was as sweet as it was astonishing.

We could never have expected this level of success so early, but the determination of the team and their real commitment to the best representation of our shooting abilities means that the successful shooting history of Terra Nova will be maintained for the future. We would like to say a special thank you to the parents who donated the funds for the new shooting range, without whom none of this would have been possible. ”

U11 7′s Rugby School Tournament (a)
Lost in Shield Final
Player of the Match: Will Fosbrook
An excellent day at a tournament with some strong schools, many of whom had been playing since September. Our group consisted of Spratton Hall, Chesham Prep and Moulsford. The first match found us up against Spratton, the eventual group winners. Conceding two early tries playing into the wind put us on the back foot, but the boys rallied to score probably their best try of the day. We then met Chesham Prep and got off to a great start with three tries in the first half. The team showed a little naivety in the second half and did not use the wind to play in the opposition half, conceding two tries which made the eventual result closer than it should have been. The final group match against Mouslford was a good game, but we were always just coming second. The all meant that we finished 3rd in the group and went into the Sheild Competition. An excellent victory against Oratory’s B Team, with some very powerful and constructive rugby took us to the final against St John’s, Chepstow. The TN Team had clearly learnt a great deal throughout the day and played well. Ultimately they were defeated by one very talented boy on the opposition team who got away twice in the match. 7s is a difficult skill, particularly when you only start playing 12 a side after half term, but the boys worked hard throughout and have had a great experience which will stand then in good stead going forward.
Hockey
U11A vs Lady Barn House (a)
Won 2 – 0
Player of the Match: Maria Bort
A great game which TN dominated the midfield and attack and did not need to prove themselves in defence. Passing was quick and accurate and the girls held their positions well, enabling the ball to be passed wide across the pitch. Lulu Pollock and Kath Neary made some brilliant crosses in front of goal for Emily Clark and Maria Bort to attack. Lexie Linnell was influential in mid-field and Eliza Stanley and Evie Baker-Wilbraham strong in defence. Emily Heidemann was untroubled in goal! Maria wins Player of the Match for her great strike of the ball for our second goal – fantastic!
Team Manager: Mrs A Cross

Hockey
U11B vs Lady Barn House (a)
Won 3 – 1
Player of the Match: Artemis Cooper
The girls played really well, showing strength, skill and determination. They dominated play from the first whistle and put huge pressure on the opposition’s defence and were soon rewarded with a goal by Abigail Pickersgill. The forwards were confident at putting passes across the ‘D’ in front of goal for someone to put away and Frankie completed these moves twice. Grace Harrison commanded mid-field, helping to tackle back and distributing the ball well to our attackers. Artemis Cooper played with increased confidence and showed tremendous composure when, under pressure on the ball, she looked up, spotted our players and passed the ball up to them rather than clearing it off the pitch. A fantastic end to a successful season – well played, girls!
Football
U8 Black vs APS (h)
Win 3-2
Player of the Match: Jonathan Price
The Terra Nova boys secured a thrilling win on home turf against APS this afternoon with a well organised display. The final score was 3-2 although they led 3-0 for the majority of the match.Player of the match, Jonathan Price closed down opposition well and showed a great touch to set up the first goal and score an excellent third.Archie McDonough demonstrated excellent finishing and positional sense throughout the game and put great pressure on the opposition defence. In defence Oliver read the game brilliantly and was well supported by Stanley Harrison and Tomas Lewis (gk). Jake Bale and Javarne Samuel worked very hard on the flanks and some of their positional sense was impressive. Callum Reid scored a brilliantly composed second goal for the lads and that goal was instrumental in the victory. In the end the boys were left holding on after a couple of errors in the middle of the pitch allowed APS in to score two quick goals. However the boys showed the resolve needed and came away with the win.
Swimming
IAPS Swimming Gala (a)
Some great individual performances from all the swimmers who were up against 6 other schools who swim regularly. We more than held our own and sheer grit and determination saw some of the team whip victory away from those who thought they had won easily. Timings have been received and hopefully the medals are on their way but a big congratulations to all the swimmers for all their efforts.
Team Manager: Mrs A Cross

Football
U8 White vs APS (h)
Lost 1-5
Players of the Match: Finlay Williams / Jamie Livermore
The boys enjoyed representing their school at football today against an APS set of boys that were a bit more co-ordinated and determined. It was good fun for the parents to watch their boys play in this match and it will be even more fun when the boys improve with improved commitment, application and dedication in Games lessons. Well done especially to Finlay Williams for scoring a good goal and to Jamie Livermore for putting in some good blocks, tackles and clearances.

02/12/2011
Rugby
U12 Rugby Tour to Isle of Man
An absolutely fantastic tour with the boys playing some fantastic hockey and rugby. On Thursday afternoon we had 2 x VII aside hockey matches against Rossall. In the A team it was very close with the ball going end to end. Bertie, Sean and Tom B-D played superbly upfront and narrowly missed scoring on a number of occasions. Oliver S and Sean covered the pitch and held their position well. Harvey and Will B in defence were almost impassable but Alastair was put under pressure in goal. The B team had a convincing victory, aided partly by the Rossall team having 7 outfield players rather than having a GK. The boys were quick to pick up the skills required for playing on astro and got the hacking and stick tackling under control. Maintaining position was more of an issue but by the end of the match they had done themselves proud. On Friday the boys played rugby and it was a very close game played in very windy conditions. The boys dug really deep and tackled well, made some excellent runs up the wing and pushed hard in the scrums. Rafe will be having nightmares about being within an inch of the try line before being tackled but within the last 10 seconds Tom E scored and Tom B-D converted giving us the narrowest of victories. On Saturday morning we returned south to warmer climes and the As and Bs played each other at hockey with Mr Lewin umpiring. It was very close and Ted stepped up to the mark and realised his true potential as a Goalie. Tom B maintains his cool calm approach and clears the ball well. Oliver B has hidden talents on the hockey pitch and has a strength to his shots. Jack can send the ball up the pitch with a great hit and is very accurate in his passing. Tom B will be a good CF going on as he has a good touch on the ball. Dan Batt uses his legs to great effect by whizzing the ball up the wing.Overall the tour was a success and the boys were a pleasure to be with.
U8 vs Ryleys (h)
Lost
Player of the Match: Sophia Davey
It was lovely to see the girls getting stuck in and trying their hardest. Everyone was so keen to get in on the action that there were more feet than sticks making contact with the ball. Over crowding was a problem and the ball was being hit backwards and forwards rather than being moved out to the wings. Sireen and Miya played superbly and made some excellent runs with the ball when they broke through the Ryleys defence. They were also very good at hitting the ball up the pitch. Deena and Sophia were very good at holding their position on the pitch and looked up to pass rather than just hitting in panic. Holly and Jennifer took some lovely push backs and followed up the ball and pushed into the attack. We came very close to scoring and as the girls became more determined the Ryleys had to dig deep to keep us out of their D.Ruby defended well and was much more effective in her glasses!A big Thanks to Jessica who stepped in for Pollyanna and played in every position as everyone rotated on and off the team. A great effort girls, well done.
Rugby	1st XV vs Sedbergh (a)
Won 27 -5
Player of the Match: Charlie Ferguson
This was a strong all round performance with some excellent work from both forwards and backs. Theo played a strong role again. Andrew and Rafe were very mobile and strong in the tackle. Harry Irlam scored a very impressive try. James Parsonage had a storming run. Every one worked really hard and the backs went forward! Charlie Ferguson was man of the match for a strong all round performance and an absolutely text book tackle. Well done everybody.
Rugby	Colts A vs Sedbergh (a)
Won 29 – 7
Player of the Match: Gus Fiennes
What a victory! The long journey to Sedbergh clearly took its toll as we were a little slow to get going. The defence held pretty solid and we only conceded the one try in the first half. Turning round with what wind there was at our backs the boys were ready for action. The forwards worked hard to produce the ball and it was given quickly to the backs to do what they do best – run it! Some rehearsed moves in the centre created space and some tight pressurised defence gave the opposition no room to move in. The tries then came for Jack Lea-Jones (2), Will Fosbrook (captaining the side), Max Rosser (making his debut) and Harry Sheil.
Rugby
U9 vs Sedbergh and Aysgarth (a)
Win 30-0 and 45-5
Players of the Match: Oliver Barlow and Hugh Porteous
2 absolutely fantastic games of text book rugby. The boys are gelling as a team and using the pieces worked on in training to great effect. Some superb individual performances and all had the burning desire to win. Grit and determination and team work. Well done boys and a great future ahead.
Rugby	Colts B vs S. Anselm’s (h)
Lost 5-49
Player of the Match: Cameron Lee
The boys came up against a stronger, more experienced and bigger team today. It was obvious from the early stages that we were going to come second as they burst through time and again ; however, there was a definite shift in momentum down to our boys’ tackling and stubbornness. St Anselm’s did not have it all their own way in the second half and our boys, especially the hard tackling and hard running Cameron Lee, did the school proud with a determined effort, where others may have capitulated.
Rugby	U9B vs S. Anselm’s (a)
Win 35-30
Player of the Match: Oscar Barry / Miles Armour
The boys played exceptionally well against a strong S. Anselm’s team. Terra Nova started slow in the first half but after an inspirational half time speech, that reminded me of Mel Gibson in Braveheart, from coach returning from retirement Mr Mitchell, the team got up and stood together in a line like Trojan Wall that could not be penetrated. The Boy’s attack was relentless like ocean waves crashing against the rocks. The second half reminded me of Agincourt, the never say die attitude, where we out flanked, out manoeuvred, and eventually defeated the opposition. Overall the team played extremely well together and deserved the win. Each boy deserves individual praise.Miles Armour – Joint Player of the Match, his tackling was immense it was like watching a dog with a bone, nothing could get out of his grasp.William Coope – His overall view of the pitch and understanding of field position helped him run straight towards the opposition try line instead of our own which meant we got great territory.Cameron Griffin – Playing whilst not 100% takes great courage and some Calpol. He tried to stay in position and made good contact with the opposition on many occasions.Edward Hammond – Side steps, spins, speed and grace. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Ed on Strictly Come Dancing sometime soon.Thomas Wheeler – Definitely the team mascot and cheerleader all in one, his enthusiasm and encouragement was infectious and even had the other teams parents cheering and getting excited.Toby Nazer-Williams – Was unfortunately ill. we sorely missed his mature outlook on the game.Sam Rosser – The silent achiever of the team, his passing and eye for space was critical. His determination was formidable.Owen Speith – His straight running ball retention was much appreciated and meant we had quick ball, more chance for counter attacks and to catch the opposition by surprise.Oscar Barry – The other Joint Player of the Match his tackling and driving was awesome, he was like a bulldozer knocking everything in his way over. Tenacity and great attacking runs through holes. And last but not leastHarry Cookson – Who had to be drafted down from the U10′s due to shortage of players. He immediately gelled with the team and formed a good chemistry between them. His attack and defense could be compare to a bull in a china shop, no one got in his way and if they were unlucky enough to they usually got barrelled over.In the words on Neil ArmstrongThis was one small step for boys, One giant leap for Terra Nova U9B rugby. This was the day Boys changed to men. Great game lads!
Hockey
U11 vs Smallwood Manor (h)
Won 4-0
Player of the Match: Ellie Costello
A great match that gave the Y6 girls an opportunity to play as a genuine U11 team. We were much stronger in every area than our opposition and much more advanced in our skills and tactics and it was only by playing some of our girls out of position that the match remained competitive and therefore a proper learning experience for them. Lucy (new to the sport) didn’t back off and listened to her defensive partner, Georgia who herself had another excellent game – fast becoming a reliable, aggressive back and a force to be reckoned with. The attackers Kath, Sofia and Ellie, worked hard at maintaining position and working the ball up the channels and along the line. Emily, out of position for 3/4 of the match and Lexie only playing half the match, moved the ball well and distributed through to the forwards who between themselves worked 4 cracking goals – 2 each for Kath and Ellie, my PoM who found herself in a few fierce tackling positions and showed considerable determination to come away with the ball. Well done girls!
Hockey	U9 vs Smallwood Manor (h)
Won 3 – 0
Player of the Match: Jessica Evans
This was a particularly exciting match which ended in a convincing win for our year 4 girls. They were all able to contribute in the match and were able to learn from their experience. Isabella and Olivia contributed well to the attacking play and Georgia made plenty of strong tackles in defence. The more experienced players maintained their positions well which enabled the team to use the width of the pitch. It was especially pleasing to see our attackers demonstrate what they had practised in their last training session – to get down low and sweep the ball into the goal – well done Grace Oakley on your hat-trick!

23/11/2011
Hockey
U13A vs Beech Hall (h)
Win 4-0
Player of the Match: Lauren Reid
Not the best performance from the girls but a good win. The Beech Hall team were very strong and had some excellent defenders. We suffered from over crowding and getting in each others way and a very muddy, slippery pitch. The girls rotated through various positions which makes it difficult to play but allows the stronger ones to adapt and show their ability to read the game. Izzy was a great forward and got really stuck in, even scoring a goal. Sophie and Lauren were their brilliant selves and fought hard for every ball and distributed well. Olivia has such a turn of speed on the wing and great fire power. She scored within seconds of getting on the pitch. Mary-Kate, Jemima and Alice-May held position well and tackled effectively. J stepped up to the role of GK and dominated her D. Unafraid to come out and clear the ball she prevented Beech hall from making many attempts on goal. After a number of matches on astro it is difficult to revert to grass but the mistakes made should not have been and the game was a lot closer than the score indicates.
Football
U8/9 vs Pownall Hall (a)
Lost
Edward Hammond
The boys tried really hard and raised their game to compete against a very strong Pownall side. With Hugh ill, Sebi stepped bravely into the role and GK and made some superb saves, taking many blows to the body. Making a brilliant save with his face caused a nose bleed but he could not be held back and was determined to play on and keep his team in the game.Fin was excellent in defence and has worked on his slide tackles. He made a brilliant run up the wing with the ball and came very close to scoring.Jamie used the strength in his legs to kick the ball up the pitch (and his shoe!) and chased after it to maintain the advantage. Alexander positioned himself well and timed his tackles and interceptions, saving many shots on goal.Henry showed how much his own footwork skills have improved and he made some good strong clears from the attacking Pownall players.Toby ran around and interrupted the flow of the Pownall boys. He maintained the pressure at all times.Harvey showed his fighting spirit and got stuck in and again managed to halt the onward progress of the opposition. Thomas maintained excellent positioning and read the game well. He has gained in strength and timed his interceptions well.Miles showed good tactical awareness and was very motivational towards the younger boys.Edward was the linch pin for the team and stepped into goal when Sebi was injured. He has improved so much and showed great maturity in his team leadership and inspirational play.
