Mr Lewin has spent a lifetime in independent schools, after being born at Oundle School and then educated at Uppingham School. He later went on to spend his whole career in co-educational, 3-13 year old, day and boarding schools.
All applicants were put through a rigorous and intensive process, which began in September. Peter John’s, Chairman of the school’s governing body said, “He was the unanimous first choice of the Governing Board in a strong field of applicants. He is fluent, committed and full of energy, and we believe he will be an outstanding Headmaster at Terra Nova."
Andrew’s wife Debbie will also be fully involved in the busy life of the school as she takes on the role of Headmaster’s Wife. She brings with her an experience of running boarding houses, as well as coaching games. They also have three children. Ellen, 12, will be following in her father’s footsteps and joining Uppingham next September whilst William, 10 and Amy, 8 are both very excited about joining Terra Nova.
Andrew commented, “As parents, the moment Debbie and I set foot in Terra Nova we knew that it had a very special atmosphere and that it was the right place for our children to continue their education. It obviously thrives on the positive values that we both firmly believe in. The happy and purposeful children that we met were clearly inspired by the dedicated staff and there is a wonderful sense of community.
As Headmaster, I am looking forward to taking the School into a very exciting and successful future. Terra Nova is a very well known school with a national reputation for the excellence of the education that it provides. Debbie and I will continue to build on the solid foundations that have been laid by Nigel and Judi and lead the school into the next stage of its proud history.”
The present Headmaster, Nigel Johnson, took over in 2001 and has enjoyed 8 years at the school, alongside his wife Judi. He is retiring at 58, and commented, “We’ve loved every second of our time at Terra Nova. I am incredibly proud to have been Headmaster for the last 8 years and recognise how much we (governors, staff, parents and children) have achieved since Judi and I joined in 2001. I would like to thank everyone for all their support. We will be very, very sad to leave but look forward to seeing the school continue to thrive and develop with Andrew and Debbie.”
